This is Valerie’s second year with BIMI. She is thrilled to be back on the island and is looking forward to engaging visitors in the uniqueness and beauty of Block Island’s maritime environment and culture. Valerie will be earning her Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Management from the University of Rhode Island (URI) this fall. She has a Bachelor’s degree in sociology from URI and has worked for over twenty years in social services. She is very interested in citizen science activities and aims to integrate her past experiences in mental health services with her current studies to integrate the community into environmental restoration projects.

Jack Lynch, a Block Island summer resident for over 30 years, is a lawyer, author, fisherman and grandfather to eight grandchildren who visit the Island each summer. He runs BIMI’s Dolphin Kids Program – one week visits by student groups from all over New England.

Judy Gray is a retired meteorologist/oceanographer from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Miami, FL. She has recently become a full time resident of Block Island, but has been coming to the island since she was born. Her grandparents, Jim and Florence (Fluffy) Bloor started coming to the island in the 1930s. Her parents, Ann and David Gray, also live on Block Island.

Susie has been coming to Block Island for 47 years and has lived on the Island full time since 2001. Susie holds a degree in American Literature from Middlebury College and studied under the leading authority on Maritime Folklore, Horace Beck.

Jim has been a Block Island resident since his retirement from corporate America in 2007. His background in human resources has prepared him well for handling the idiosyncrasies of sea creatures. Jim loves all water sports and supports marine education/preservation.

Prof. Mellor’s research concerns the Princeton Ocean Model. It is used throughout the world by research scientists, academic and government institutions. He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union & a graduate from M.I.T.

Bruce came to the Island with his family as a day-tripper when he was 4. He returned again in 1966 at the age of 35 with his family and has been here every summer since then. When asked why, Bruce says to just look around; great scenery, great beaches & great fishing.

John has been coming to Block Island since 1966 – for the first years, by boat, and then as a summer resident since 1978. His kids have grown up working on the Island during the summers and now their children have fallen in love, too. John’s business focuses on the production of fish, animal and bird activity times. His wife Sharon is a talented BI artist.

Don is a retired engineer, long-time sailor to Block Island and resident. Don is one of the founding board members of the Block Island Maritime Institute and is active in Block Island conservation efforts.
